Here come the Heirlooms

I checked out an urban Farmer's Market today located right in the center of downtown SF. I was mesmerized by the bountiful pile of heirloom tomatoes and all the different colors and shapes.

  1. What a great selection. Now I'm going to have to check out our local farmer's market although I doubt they'll have so many.

  2. Looks like there's enough green ones for fried green tomatoes. Yum.

  3. I grew heirlooms from seeds this year and started out with 70 seedlings. Shared with friends and neighbors and then wound up losing 95 percent of them to some type of insect. I have a few measly plants left with about one tomato on each plant (and this process started in January!). The local varieties are doing well, so I think it is just too dry here for heirlooms. Even though I water them daily, we have virtually no humidity in the spring so if I try them again, I'm going to put them under a mister!
